Exploring Merriwagga
Merriwagga is surrounded by the Merriwagga State Forest. This forest is a large area of about 15 square kilometers (5.8 square miles). It is mostly covered with mallee trees and shrubs.
The Merriwagga Post Office first opened its doors on May 26, 1924. This was an important step for the new community.
Merriwagga's Railway and Grain
The town has a railway station that connects it to other places. You can find it between Goolgowi station and Goorawin station.
Merriwagga is a key spot for farming. It has three huge grain silos and two grain collection centers. Farmers bring their harvested crops here to be stored and sent out.
The Black Stump Hotel
Right across from the grain depots, you'll find the famous Black Stump Hotel. This hotel was built in 1926. People say it has the tallest bar in Australia!
The name "Black Stump" comes from a local story. It's about a pioneer woman named Mrs. Barbara Blain. She passed away in March 1886 near a place called Black Stump Tank. This spot is about halfway between Merriwagga and Gunbar.
Her story and the lives of other early pioneer women are remembered in the Memorial to Pioneer Woman of the Merriwagga District. This memorial is a special place for reflection. You can find it next to the picnic area, between the Black Stump Hotel and the grain depots.
