Mescalero (which is called Mashgal in the Apache language) is a small community in New Mexico, United States. It's located in Otero County, right on the Mescalero Apache Reservation. Mescalero is known as a census-designated place (CDP). This means it's an area that the government counts for population, but it's not a city with its own local government. In 2010, about 1,338 people lived there.

History of Mescalero
Mescalero was first known by a different name: Blazer's Mill. This place was famous for a gunfight that happened there. The gunfight was part of a bigger conflict called the Lincoln County War. This war was a fight between rival groups in New Mexico during the late 1870s.
Geography of Mescalero
Mescalero is located in a beautiful part of New Mexico. The United States Census Bureau measures the size of places like Mescalero. They found that this community covers an area of about 17.9 square miles (46.3 square kilometers). All of this area is land, with no large bodies of water inside its borders.

In 2010, a census (a count of all people) showed that 1,338 people lived in Mescalero. These people lived in 404 households. A household is like a home where people live together. About 283 of these households were families.
Most of the people in Mescalero are Native American, making up over 90% of the population. There are also people of White, African American, and Asian backgrounds. Some people are also Hispanic or Latino.
Many households in Mescalero have children. In fact, almost half of the households had children under 18 living there. The average household had about 3.5 people. The community has a young population, with many people under the age of 25.
Education in Mescalero
There are schools that serve the children of Mescalero. The main school system is called Mescalero Apache Schools. This school teaches students from kindergarten all the way through 12th grade. It is connected with the Bureau of Indian Education (BIE). Even though the school has a Mescalero mailing address, it is actually located just outside the main community area.
Another school district that serves the area is Tularosa Municipal Schools. This district provides education for students living in and around Tularosa, which is near Mescalero.
