Early Life and Education
Meshulam Dovid Soloveitchik was born in Brześć, Poland (now Brest, Belarus). He was one of twelve children. His father, Yitzchok Zev Soloveitchik, was also a well-known rabbi.
He began his studies at a local religious school called Mekor Chaim. When he was twelve, his father saw that he was very smart. So, he sent him to a yeshiva (a Jewish religious school) for older students. This yeshiva was called Yeshiva Toras Chesed.
Later, Soloveitchik studied at the Kamenitz Yeshiva. His teacher there was Boruch Ber Leibowitz. When World War II started, he moved to Mandatory Palestine (now Israel) with his father. They settled in Jerusalem. He later married Yehudis, the daughter of Asher Sternbuch.
Leading a Yeshiva
In the late 1970s, Rabbi Soloveitchik started his own yeshiva in Jerusalem. A rosh yeshiva is like the principal or dean of a yeshiva. He teaches the students and guides them in their studies.
The Brisk yeshivas in Israel are known for their special way of studying the Talmud. The Talmud is a very important book of Jewish law and tradition. Many young, talented students, especially from the United States, came to study with him.
Rabbi Soloveitchik did not publish many books himself. However, his students wrote down and published many of his teachings. He was seen as one of the last people who truly remembered Jewish life and learning before World War II. People often quoted his memories of his father's and grandfather's teachings.
His Family
Rabbi Soloveitchik's oldest son is named Yitzchok Zev Soloveitchik (II). He was a maggid shiur, which means a lecturer, in his father's yeshiva. When Rabbi Meshulam Dovid Soloveitchik passed away, his son Yitzchok Zev took over as the new rosh yeshiva.
His daughter, Hendel, is married to Nechemya Kaplan. Nechemya Kaplan is also a rosh yeshiva at Yeshiva Shaar HaTalmud in Jerusalem.
His Passing
Rabbi Meshulam Dovid Soloveitchik passed away on January 31, 2021. He was 99 years old. About ten thousand people came to his funeral to show their respect. He was buried next to his father in Har Hamenuchos, a large cemetery in Jerusalem.
At the funeral, it was announced that his oldest son, Yitzchok Zev, would become the new rosh yeshiva of Brisk. This was according to his father's wishes.
Notable Students
Rabbi Soloveitchik taught many students who became important leaders and scholars. Some of them include:
- Eliezer Geldzahler (1958-2004), who was a rosh yeshiva in Brooklyn, New York.
