Mesita is a small community in Cibola County, New Mexico, United States. It is known as a census-designated place (CDP). This means it is an area defined by the government for counting people, but it is not an officially incorporated city or town. In 2020, about 793 people lived in Mesita.
Geography of Mesita
Mesita is located in the eastern part of Cibola County. It shares a border with the community of Laguna to its northwest. A major highway, Interstate 40, goes right through Mesita. You can get on or off the highway using Exit 117.
Interstate 40 connects Mesita to other important places. If you drive west for about 35 miles (56 km), you will reach Grants. Grants is the main town and county seat of Cibola County. If you drive east for about 44 miles (71 km), you will arrive in Albuquerque, a much larger city.
The Rio San Jose river flows along the northeast side of Mesita. This river is a branch of the Rio Puerco. The total area of Mesita is about 7.49 square miles (19.39 square kilometers). Only a very small part of this area, about 0.01 square miles (0.04 square kilometers), is water.
