Metalspinning facts for kids
Imagine shaping a flat piece of metal into a cool, round object like a bowl or a lamp shade! That's what metal spinning is all about. It's a special way to make hollow, round, and perfectly balanced metal items. This amazing process uses a machine, often called a lathe, to spin a piece of sheet metal very fast. As the metal spins, tools press against it, slowly shaping it over a mold.
Metal spinning is not a new trick! It has been around for thousands of years, dating back to Ancient Egypt. It's a bit like how a potter's wheel shapes clay, but instead, it works with metal!

How Metal Spinning Works
The journey of a metal-spun object starts with a flat, round piece of metal, or sometimes a metal cylinder. This piece is carefully cut to the exact size needed for the final product.
The Spinning Form
To give the metal its shape, a special mold called a "form" or "mandrel" is used. Think of it as the inner shape of the object you want to create. These forms are often made from strong metals like aluminum or tough, hardened steel.
Shaping the Metal
The flat metal disk is clamped tightly against this form on the spinning machine. As the machine spins the metal and the form together at high speeds, a craftsperson (or a machine arm) uses special tools to press against the spinning metal. This pressure slowly pushes the metal over the form, making it take on the desired shape. It's a bit like stretching dough, but with metal!
From Handcraft to High-Tech
For a long time, metal spinning was mostly used to make unique items or just a few parts, like prototypes (first versions of a product). It was a skilled handcraft. But today, with modern automatic lathes, metal spinning can quickly make many parts. This makes it a very useful and affordable way to produce many different metal objects.
