Methven is a large village in Scotland. It is located in the Perth and Kinross area, west of the city of Perth. The village is close to Almondbank.
Methven has many useful places for its residents. These include a primary school, a church, and a bowling club. There are also community halls, a playing field with sports areas, and a skate-park. You can find different businesses in the village too.
A well-known independent school, Glenalmond College, is located nearby. It offers education for both day students and those who live at the school. This school is known for its excellent quality of education.

What Does the Name Methven Mean?
The name Methven comes from an old British language. It is thought to be made up of words similar to the Welsh words medd (meaning "mead," a drink) and maen (meaning "stone").
Local Businesses and Industry
Methven has a small industrial area south of the village. This area is located where the old Methven Station used to be. The train station closed a long time ago, in 1937. It was once the end point of the Perth, Almond Valley and Methven Railway line.
You can also find the Strathearn distillery near the village. This distillery makes single malt Scotch whisky.
Improving the Village: Local Issues
In 2008, work started on a new pedestrian crossing in Methven. Local people had asked for this crossing for many years. They wanted it because the main road through the village is very busy. The work took a while to finish, finally being completed in August 2009. The construction, along with gas pipe upgrades, caused some temporary disruptions.

Methven has a rich history, including a famous battle.
The Battle of Methven
The Battle of Methven happened in 1306. This was during the Scottish Wars of Independence. In this battle, Scottish forces led by King Robert the Bruce were surprised by English forces. The English, led by Aymer de Valence, 2nd Earl of Pembroke, won this battle. However, the Scots eventually won the war and gained their independence back.
Other Historical Sites
There was once a Royal Air Force base nearby called RAF Methven.
Smiddy House is an old building on Main Street. It was built around 1840. Today, it is considered to be at risk because of its condition.
Famous People from Methven
Several important people have connections to Methven.
- Very Rev Dr James Oswald was a minister in Methven from 1750 to 1783. He was also the leader of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland in 1765.
- Dr William Marshall was born in Methven in 1834. He became Queen Victoria's personal doctor at Balmoral in 1871. He served as a royal physician until 1881.
- Sir Thomas Graham, 1st Baron Lynedoch was a military hero. He was born and grew up at Balgowan House in the area. He is buried near the main church.
- Reverend Dr Robert Stirling was born in Methven. He invented the Stirling engine.
- Sir Alexander Kemp Wright was also born in Methven. He became a well-known banker.
