Metolius Springs are amazing natural springs located in central Oregon, United States. They are found near the small town of Camp Sherman, close to Black Butte.

These springs are super important because they are the very beginning of the Metolius River. This river flows for about 29 miles (47 km) through the beautiful Deschutes National Forest before it reaches Lake Billy Chinook. What makes Metolius Springs special is how much water comes out of them! Enough water flows from these springs to create a full-sized river right away. This makes the Metolius River one of the largest rivers in the United States that is fed only by springs.

The name Metolius comes from a word in the Sahaptin language, spoken by the Warm Springs people. The word is mitula, and it means white salmon. This refers to a light-colored type of Chinook salmon, not a whitefish.

Visiting Metolius Springs

A Gift to the Public

The land around Metolius Springs, including about 160 acres (0.65 km²) of natural area, used to belong to a wealthy lumber mill owner named Sam Johnson. Mr. Johnson really loved the springs and wanted to keep them natural. He also allowed people to visit and enjoy the beautiful area where the river starts.

In 1965, Sam Johnson decided to give the Metolius Springs viewing area to the United States Forest Service. This meant that the land would be protected and kept open for everyone to enjoy forever.

What You Can Do There Today

Today, the U.S. Forest Service takes care of the Metolius Springs area. It's a special place for day visits, meaning you can come for the day but not camp overnight.

The site is usually open from April until November, depending on the weather. There's a paved path that leads from the parking area right to the best spot to see the springs. Along the path, you'll find signs that teach you interesting facts about the springs and the area.

You can also find three picnic tables if you want to bring your lunch and eat outdoors. There's also a simple vault-type toilet available. However, there is no drinking water, so make sure to bring your own water bottle. Remember, camping is not allowed at this site.
