The Mexican spotted wood turtle (Rhinoclemmys rubida), also known as the Mexican spotted terrapin, is a special kind of turtle. It belongs to the turtle family called Geoemydidae.

About the Mexican Spotted Wood Turtle

This turtle is endemic to Mexico. This means you can only find it living naturally in Mexico and nowhere else in the world! It lives in the southern parts of Mexico, especially on the Pacific side. You can find these turtles from sea level all the way up to 1,350 meters high in the mountains.

Different Kinds of Mexican Spotted Wood Turtles

Scientists recognize two main types, or subspecies, of the Mexican spotted wood turtle:

  • R. rubida rubida: This subspecies lives in the Mexican states of Oaxaca and Chiapas.
  • R. rubida perixantha: This subspecies is found in the states of Jalisco, Colima, Michoacán, and Guerrero.
