Santa Lucía Air Force Base (airport codes: NLU, MMSM) is a large military airport located in Santa Lucía, in the State of Mexico, Mexico. For many years, it served as an important base for Mexico's air force.
In October 2019, a big change was suggested for this military airport. The idea was to turn it into a civilian airport. This means it would also be used for regular passenger flights, not just military planes.
Building a New Airport
The plan for the airport was very ambitious. It included building two new runways and a brand new terminal building. A terminal is where passengers check in, go through security, and board their planes.
Opening Date and Plans
The first part of the new airport was planned to open by March 21, 2022. This date was set by Mexico's president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador. The goal was to help ease air traffic at the busy Mexico City International Airport.
Who Will Run It?
The new airport will be managed by the Secretariat of National Defense (SEDENA). SEDENA is a part of the Mexican government that handles military matters. They will also receive all the money the airport earns. This is a unique way to run a civilian airport.
A New Name
The new airport will be known by a different name. It will be called General Felipe Ángeles International Airport. This name honors a famous Mexican general.
