Miami is a small community in Indiana, a state in the United States. It's located in Miami County, specifically in Deer Creek Township. Even though it's not a city with its own government, it's recognized as a "census-designated place" (CDP) by the government for counting people.
How Miami Started
Miami was started a long time ago, in 1849. A person named Isaac Herrell founded it. His brother, James Herrell, helped by planning out the town's streets and lots. This is called "platting."
Another brother, Austin Herrell, was important too. He started the very first church and school right in his own home. Later, James's son, Beecher, opened the first grocery store in Miami. The community got its name from Miami County, where it is located.
Where Miami Is Located
Miami is found in the southwestern part of Miami County. It is about 1 mile east of a major road called U.S. Route 31.
The community is also about 11 miles south of Peru, which is the main town and "county seat" of Miami County. It's also about 9 miles north of a larger city called Kokomo.
Land and Water Around Miami
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the Miami community covers an area of about 0.165 square miles. All of this area is land. A stream called Deer Creek flows along the southern edge of the community. This creek eventually flows west into the Wabash River near Delphi.
