The Miccosukee gooseberry (Ribes echinellum) is a very rare shrub found in North America. It belongs to the currant family. This plant is special because there are only a few places where it grows naturally.

Scientists first found the Miccosukee gooseberry in Florida in 1924. This was near Lake Miccosukee. Later, more plants were discovered in South Carolina in 1957 and 1981. One of these groups of plants is now protected at Steven's Creek Heritage Preserve.

What the Miccosukee Gooseberry Looks Like

This shrub can grow quite tall, up to 150 cm (about 5 feet). It has small, sharp spines on its stems. These spines are found at the "nodes," which are the spots where the leaves attach to the stem.

The leaves of the Miccosukee gooseberry are round or shaped like an egg. Each leaf usually has three distinct lobes. The plant also produces pretty flowers that are whitish or a pale yellow color. After the flowers, it grows purple berries. These berries are also covered in small spines.

Where the Miccosukee Gooseberry Lives

The Miccosukee gooseberry prefers to grow in shady spots. It often lives under deciduous trees. These are trees that lose their leaves in the fall.

The plant likes soil that is moist but also drains water well. It grows best in soil with a pH level between 6.7 and 7.4. This means the soil is slightly acidic to slightly alkaline.

Growing the Miccosukee Gooseberry

People sometimes grow the Miccosukee gooseberry in gardens. This happens in a few places outside of where it naturally grows. For example, it is grown as far south as Hudson, Florida. However, when it is grown in these new places, it usually does not make new plants on its own. This means it does not reproduce easily outside its natural home.
