The range of Ribes |
Ribes is a group of about 150 different kinds of flowering plants. These plants grow naturally in the cooler, temperate parts of the Northern Hemisphere. Ribes is the only group of plants in the family called Grossulariaceae.
Sometimes, scientists place Ribes in a different plant family called Saxifragaceae. A few experts also think that gooseberry plants should be in their own separate group, Grossularia.
Growing Ribes Plants
The Ribes group includes many plants that grow tasty fruits. These fruits are often called currants or gooseberries. Some popular types are blackcurrant, redcurrant, and white currant. The gooseberry is also part of this group.
It is important not to confuse these currants with the dried currants used in baking. Those are actually small grapes, like the Zante currant. The Ribes plant even gave its name to a popular blackcurrant drink called Ribena.
Ornamental Ribes Varieties
Besides fruit-bearing plants, the Ribes group also has beautiful ornamental plants. These are grown for their pretty flowers. They are often called flowering currants. An example is R. sanguineum, which has lovely pink or red flowers.
