Public Service Career
Serving as Sheriff
Michael Jackson joined the Prince George's County Sheriff's Office. He later became the president of the police union there. In 2002, he was elected as the county sheriff. He served two terms, from 2002 to 2010.
As Sheriff, Jackson helped create the first 24-hour unit in Maryland to help victims of domestic violence. He received several awards for his work, including the Victims' Rights Caucus Award in 2008. His department also won the Governor's Award in 2007.
The Sheriff's department works in a large area with many residents. It includes important places like Fedex Field (a big football stadium) and the University of Maryland, College Park.
Important Incidents as Sheriff
During his time as Sheriff, there were a couple of important incidents that led to changes in how the department operated.
In July 2008, Jackson's department was involved in an investigation that led them to a home in Berwyn Heights, Maryland. It turned out to be the home of the mayor, Cheye Calvo. This incident caused a lot of discussion about how police investigations should be handled. People talked about the importance of clear rules and working together with local police. The county later settled a lawsuit related to this event. They also agreed to create new rules for how officers should treat animals and how special police teams should be used.
Two years later, in 2010, a deputy from Jackson's department was serving an eviction notice. During this process, a family's dog was killed. This incident also highlighted the need for deputies to follow all procedures carefully. It showed how important it is for officers to wait for animal control services when animals are present.
Maryland Delegate Role
Michael Jackson was first elected to the Maryland House of Delegates in November 2014. He officially started his role in January 2015. As a Delegate, he worked on the Appropriations committee. This committee deals with how the state's money is spent.
