Playing for Emelec
Michael Arroyo began his football journey in the youth teams of Emelec. He was seen as a very talented player early on. He played 73 games for Emelec.
Time with Deportivo Quito
Starting in 2009
In January 2009, Michael moved to Deportivo Quito. He played his first game a few months later. He scored two goals in his debut match, helping his team win 2–0. Arroyo scored more goals throughout the season. He helped Deportivo Quito win the 2009 Ecuadorian Serie A league title. He scored 10 goals in 17 league games that year.
Season of 2010
Arroyo started the 2010 season with a 1–1 draw against Emelec. He scored his first goal of the season in March. He scored three more goals for Deportivo Quito that season. After showing great skill in the Serie A, he moved to San Luis in Mexico.
Moving to San Luis in Mexico
Years 2010 to 2012
In May 2010, Arroyo joined San Luis in Mexico's top league, Liga MX. He was known for his strong long-range shots. He scored several goals against different teams in his first season. In 2011, he also played in the Copa Libertadores. He scored two goals in that tournament, including a volley from far away.
Playing for Atlante
The 2012 Season
On November 30, 2011, Arroyo moved to Atlante. He scored a free-kick goal against his old team, San Luis. He chose not to celebrate that goal. He scored three more goals for Atlante that season. In the summer of 2012, he was loaned to Barcelona SC in Ecuador. This was interesting because he had played for their rivals, Emelec.
Loan to Barcelona SC
Success in 2012
Arroyo's first game for Barcelona SC was a 2–1 win against Emelec. He scored his first goals for Barcelona in September. He scored two long-range goals in a game against Cobreloa. In November, Arroyo helped Barcelona SC win the 2012 Serie A championship. This was a big win, as Barcelona had not won the league in almost 14 years.
The 2013 Season
For the 2013 season, Arroyo wore jersey number 7. He scored his first goal of the season from a penalty kick in February. He later scored his first league goal in a big 4–0 win. Arroyo scored a free-kick goal in a 6–2 victory. He continued to score important goals throughout the season. He scored twice in a game against LDU Quito.
Returning to Atlante
In 2014, Arroyo went back to Atlante. In March, he scored four goals in one game against Querétaro. Atlante won that match 4–2. He finished that tournament with eight goals in sixteen games.
Time with Club América
In July 2014, Arroyo joined América on loan. He scored his first goal for América in October. In December, he scored the first goal in the championship final against Tigres UANL. América won 3–0 and became the Apertura 2014 champions. This was Arroyo's first title in Mexico. He was also named the Most Valuable Player of the final match.
Playing for Grêmio
Arroyo joined the Brazilian club Grêmio in June 2017. He signed a three-year contract. He played in 7 games for the club.
Michael Arroyo's International Career
Arroyo played for the Ecuador U-20 team in 2007. He scored a goal in their 3–1 win against Venezuela. In May 2010, he was called up to the senior national team for the first time. He played a full game against Mexico.
He scored his first goal for the main Ecuador team in May 2011, also against Mexico. The game ended in a 1–1 draw. Arroyo scored an impressive long-range shot against England. He played in the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
