Michael Patrick Boatman (born October 25, 1964) is an American actor and writer. He is famous for playing many different characters on TV and in movies. You might know him as Carter Heywood in the TV show Spin City. He also played Samuel Beckett in the drama series China Beach. Michael was also in the movie Hamburger Hill and the show Arli$$. More recently, he starred in The Good Fight.
Growing Up and Learning
Michael Boatman was born in Colorado Springs, Colorado. His mom, Gwendolyn Boatman Pugh, helped people with disabilities find jobs. His dad, Daniel Boatman, was an army officer. Michael grew up in Chicago.
He went to Western Illinois University to study acting. While there, he played many roles in plays. He was even in a comedy group called Shock Treatment. In his last year of college, Michael won a big acting award called the Irene Ryan theater award. He won it for being the best supporting actor.
Michael's Acting Journey
In 1986, Michael moved to Chicago to keep learning about acting. Soon after, he got a role in the movie Hamburger Hill. This movie was about the Vietnam War. That same year, he appeared in Running on Empty.
In 1988, he joined the TV show China Beach. He played Samuel Beckett, who worked at the mortuary. He was on the show for three seasons. Later, Michael starred in the ABC sitcom Spin City starting in 1996. He played Carter Heywood, an aide to the mayor. For this role, he was nominated for five NAACP Image Awards. He also won a GLAAD award for Best Actor.
While on Spin City, Michael also played Stanley Babson in the HBO series Arli$$. He worked on both shows at the same time until they ended in 2002. He was nominated for four Image Awards for his work on Arli$$. He also appeared in movies like The Peacemaker with George Clooney.
Michael has made many guest appearances on popular TV shows. These include Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Scrubs, CSI: Miami, and Grey's Anatomy. In 2009, he joined the cast of the TV show Sherri. He played Doctor Randy Gregg, a pediatrician.
From 2009 to 2015, he played attorney Julius Cain in The Good Wife. He also reunited with his Spin City co-star Charlie Sheen in the show Anger Management. From 2013 to 2015, he starred in Instant Mom on Nick at Nite. In 2017, he became a main cast member on The Good Fight. He played Julius Cain again, continuing his role from The Good Wife.
Michael as a Writer
Besides acting, Michael Boatman is also a writer. He writes novels and short stories. Some of his stories are in the horror genre. A famous writer, Joe R. Lansdale, praised Michael's writing. He said Michael writes like "a visitor from hell."
Michael's short stories have appeared in many collections. These include Sick Things and Christmas in Hell. His stories have also been published in magazines like Weird Tales. His first collection of short stories, God Laughs When You Die, came out in 2007. He also wrote a funny horror novel called The Revenant Road in 2009.
