Alexander Michael Gregory (born December 15, 1945) is a former high-ranking officer in the Royal Navy, which is the United Kingdom's navy. He reached the rank of Rear Admiral. From 1997 to 2000, he was in charge of naval operations for Scotland, Northern England, and Northern Ireland.

Michael Gregory joined the Royal Navy in 1964. This was the start of a long and successful career serving his country at sea. He spent many years learning and training to become a skilled naval officer.
Leading Submarines and Frigates
Early in his career, Gregory gained important experience. He was given command of three different submarines. Submarines are special ships that can travel underwater. Later, in 1988, he became the captain of a frigate called HMS Cumberland. A frigate is a type of warship used for protecting other ships and patrolling the seas.
Working in Defence and Diplomacy
After his time at sea, Michael Gregory took on important roles on land. He worked as an Assistant Director in the Naval Staff Duties department at the Ministry of Defence. This is the government department that manages the UK's armed forces.
In 1994, he became a naval attaché in Washington D. C., USA. A naval attaché is a military expert who works at an embassy. Their job is to share information and build good relationships between their country's navy and the navy of the host country.
Becoming a Flag Officer
In 1997, Gregory was promoted to Flag Officer, Scotland, Northern England and Northern Ireland. This was a very important leadership position. It meant he was responsible for all naval activities and personnel in those regions. He served in this role until he retired from the Royal Navy in 2000.
After leaving the Royal Navy, Michael Gregory continued to have a busy career. He took on leadership roles in different industries.
Leading Industry Organizations
He became the chief executive of the Mechanical and Metal Trades Confederation. A chief executive is the highest-ranking manager in an organization. He then became the Chief Executive of the Energy Industries Council. These roles showed his ability to lead large organizations even outside the military.
Serving as Lord Lieutenant
Michael Gregory also became the Lord Lieutenant of Dunbartonshire. A Lord Lieutenant is the King's or Queen's personal representative in a county or area of the United Kingdom. This is a special role that involves supporting the Royal Family and local communities.
Special Recognition
