Michael Hackett's Basketball Journey
Michael Hackett started his basketball journey in college. He attended Jacksonville University from 1978 to 1982. During his time there, a coach from another university, Gene Bartow, called him "the best 6-foot-5 player in America." This shows how talented he was even at a young age.
Drafted by the Lakers
After college, Michael Hackett was chosen in the 1982 NBA draft. The Los Angeles Lakers picked him as the 21st player in the third round. However, he was released by the team before the season began. This meant he didn't get to play in the NBA.
Playing Overseas: Philippines and Israel
Even though he didn't play in the NBA, Michael Hackett had a very successful career overseas. He played in different countries, including the Philippines and Israel.
Success in the Philippines
In the Philippines, Michael Hackett played for a team called Ginebra San Miguel in the PBA. He became one of the highest-scoring "imports" (foreign players) in the history of the PBA.
On November 21, 1985, he set a new PBA record by scoring an amazing 103 points in one game against the Great Taste team. This record was later broken by Tony Harris, who scored 105 points. In the same year, Michael Hackett won the PBA's "Best Import of the Conference Award."
The next year, in 1986, he teamed up with another great player named Billy Ray Bates. They formed what many people consider the best "import tandem" (two foreign players) in PBA history. Together, they led Ginebra to win the 1986 Open Conference championship.
Top Scorer in Israel
Michael Hackett also played basketball in Israel. In 1991, he achieved another major accomplishment. He became the top scorer in the Israeli League. This showed his consistent ability to score points in different leagues around the world.
