Michael David Herr (born April 13, 1940 – died June 23, 2016) was an American writer. He was also a war correspondent, which means he reported from war zones. Michael Herr is best known for his book Dispatches (1977). This book was about his time reporting on the Vietnam War for Esquire magazine.
The New York Times Book Review called Dispatches the best book written about the Vietnam War. Another famous writer, John le Carré, said it was "the best book I have ever read on men and war in our time."

Michael Herr's Early Life and Career
Michael Herr was born in Lexington, Kentucky. His father was a jeweler. He grew up in Syracuse, New York. His family was Jewish.
After working for Esquire magazine in the 1960s, Herr published his most famous book, Dispatches, in 1977. This book helped him become well-known.
Michael Herr's Work in Movies
Michael Herr also worked on several movies. He helped write the narration for Francis Ford Coppola's 1979 film Apocalypse Now. Narration is the voice-over that tells part of the story.
He also co-wrote the screenplay for the movie Full Metal Jacket (1987). He worked on this film with director Stanley Kubrick and author Gustav Hasford. A screenplay is the script for a movie. Full Metal Jacket was based on Hasford's novel The Short-Timers. The screenplay was even nominated for an Academy Award.
Herr also helped write the first version of the screenplay for the 1996 film The Island of Dr. Moreau. This movie was based on a book by H. G. Wells. Later, he was credited for writing the narration for Francis Ford Coppola's 1997 film The Rainmaker.
Michael Herr and Stanley Kubrick
Michael Herr wrote two articles for Vanity Fair magazine about the famous film director Stanley Kubrick. These articles were later put together into a short book called Kubrick (2000). This book was a personal story about the director.
Later Life and Passing
Michael Herr lived with his wife, Valerie, in Delhi, New York. He passed away on June 23, 2016, when he was 76 years old.
