Delhi (pronounced DEL-hy) is a town in Delaware County, New York, United States. In 2020, about 4,795 people lived there. The town is in the east-central part of the county. It includes the small village also named Delhi. The State University of New York at Delhi is located in the town.
The town was named after the city of Delhi, which is the capital of India. One of the founders, Ebenezer Foote, was known as "The Great Mogul," a title that refers to powerful leaders. Another founder, Erastus Root, had a different idea for the name. When he found out it would be called Delhi, he joked about its pronunciation. Some people also say the name is pronounced "DEL-hy" because it's "HIGH" on the DELaware River.
The town is also famous as the setting for the 1959 book My Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead George.
