Since January 2025, he has served as a Minister of State at the Department of Education and Youth. Early Life and Education

Michael Moynihan was born in Cork, Ireland, in 1968. He grew up in Kiskeam, which is also in County Cork. He went to school locally at Boherbue Comprehensive School. He is a dairy farmer by profession.

It's interesting to note that he is not related to other politicians named Donal Moynihan or Aindrias Moynihan. They were a father and son who also worked in politics and were part of the same party and area.

His Political Journey

Michael Moynihan first became involved in national politics in 1997. He was elected to Dáil Éireann, which is the main house of the Irish parliament. He became a Teachta Dála (TD) for the Fianna Fáil party.

His election in 1997 was quite a surprise. He managed to win a seat from Frank Crowley, a politician from the Fine Gael party. This area had usually been very strong for Fine Gael.

Key Roles and Elections

From 2004 to 2007, Michael Moynihan was the chairperson of the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Education and Science. This committee helps make decisions about education and science in Ireland. He also led Ógra Fianna Fáil, which is the youth group of his political party, until 2005.

He has been very successful in elections. He received the most votes in his area in the 2002 general election. He was re-elected in every general election since then, including in 2007, 2011, 2016, and 2020.

He has held several important roles within his party. From 2011 to 2012, he was the Fianna Fáil spokesperson for Agriculture and Food. Then, from 2012 to 2016, he was the spokesperson for Communications, Energy, and Natural Resources. From 2016 to 2020, he served as the Opposition Chief Whip.
