Fr. Michael Murphy was an Irish Catholic priest and a leader during the Irish Rebellion of 1798. This was a big uprising in Ireland. He was born around 1767 and died on June 9, 1798. He became an important figure in the group called the United Irishmen. They wanted Ireland to be more independent.

Early Life and Becoming a Priest

Fr. Michael Murphy was born around 1767. His exact birthplace in Ireland is not fully known. Some say he was from Ballinoulart, Castleannesley, or Kilnew in County Wexford.

He went to a special school called a hedge school in Oulart. These schools were often held outdoors or in secret. He then studied in France at the Irish College in Bordeaux. After his studies, he became a priest in 1785 in Wexford. His first church was in Ballycanew.

Joining the Rebellion

The Irish Rebellion of 1798 was a major event. It was a fight for more freedom for Ireland. Many church leaders wanted peace. However, Fr. Murphy joined the rebellion on May 27, 1798.

He decided to join after his church was damaged. Soldiers called Crown yeomen had vandalized it. This event pushed him to take part in the fight.

Role in the Battles

Fr. Murphy became an active leader in the rebellion. He moved towards important battle sites. He was present at Gorey, Kilthomas Hill, and Ballyorril Hill.

At Ballyorril Hill, he met another priest, Fr. John Murphy of Boolavogue. Both priests played a role in guiding the rebels.

The Battle of Arklow

Fr. Michael Murphy was involved in the Battle of Arklow. This battle took place on June 9, 1798. During the fight, he was on horseback. He was attacking a gun position. Sadly, he was killed by gunfire during this battle.

His grave is located at Castle Ellis.
