Michael Ponti (born October 29, 1937 – died October 17, 2022) was a famous German classical pianist. He was known for being the first to record all the piano music by composers like Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, and Scriabin. He made over 80 recordings. About 50 of these were of piano concertos from the Romantic period that were rarely played. Often, his recordings were the only ones available at the time. He also played and recorded chamber music with his group, the Ponti-Zimansky-Polasek Trio.
Early Life and Musical Journey
Michael Ponti was born in Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany. His father was an American diplomat, and his mother later became an American citizen. Michael spent most of his childhood and teenage years in the United States.
While he was still in school in Washington, D.C., he took piano lessons for ten years. Seven of those years were with Gilmour McDonald. When Michael was just eleven years old, he played all of Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier from memory. He performed it in four different concerts at the YMCA in Washington.
In 1955, his family moved back to Germany. Ponti continued his music studies at the Musikhochschule Frankfurt until 1961. He also took special master classes with famous pianists like Arthur Rubinstein and Robert Casadesus.
Building a Career
In 1964, Michael Ponti became a finalist in the Queen Elisabeth Competition. He then won first prize at the Busoni Piano Competition in Italy. This win helped him start an international career.
Soon after, he made his first big performance in Vienna. He played Bartók's 2nd Piano Concerto with conductor Wolfgang Sawallisch. His official New York debut was in March 1972 at the Alice Tully Hall. He played a very long concert that included many difficult pieces and nine encores.
Ponti played with many well-known orchestras. These included the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande and the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra. He also worked with famous conductors like Georg Solti. He traveled a lot, performing in Europe, Egypt, Japan, and South America. In 1977, he started his own music group, the Ponti-Zimansky-Polasek Trio. They played together for 20 years.
Later Years
In the late 1990s, Michael Ponti had a stroke. This meant he could no longer use his right hand and arm. Even with a lot of therapy, he could not return to playing or recording as he used to. However, he still gave concerts where he played music written for only the left hand.
Michael Ponti passed away in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, on October 17, 2022. He was 84 years old.
Amazing Recordings
Michael Ponti started making recordings in 1961. He recorded Ravel's Jeux d'eau and Schubert's Wanderer Fantasy.
He became famous for recording many romantic pieces that were not well-known. He recorded about 50 concertos for the Vox label. Many of these had never been recorded before. Some of them have not been recorded by anyone else since. This series began in 1968 with music by Ignaz Moscheles. He was also the first to record Charles-Valentin Alkan's Concerto da camera No. 2 in 1979.
Ponti recorded works by many different composers. These included Mily Balakirev, Moritz Moszkowski, Clara Schumann, and Anton Rubinstein. He was also the first to record all the piano music by Scriabin, Tchaikovsky, and Rachmaninoff. At the time, much of this music was hard to find.
With his trio, he recorded chamber music by composers like Mozart, Beethoven, and Brahms. In total, Michael Ponti made more than 80 recordings. Many of these have been re-released on CDs for new listeners to enjoy.
