Club Career Highlights
Starting His Football Journey
Michael Rensing was born in Germany. His father was German and his mother was Serbian. He joined the Bayern Munich club in 2000. He quickly showed his talent in their youth teams.
He played a few games for Bayern's second team in the 2001–02 season. In the 2002–03 season, he played 34 league games. He also played in one cup game. Soon, he became the second-choice goalkeeper for the main Bayern team. He was the backup for the famous goalkeeper Oliver Kahn.
Playing for Bayern Munich

Michael Rensing played his first top-league game, called a Bundesliga debut, on February 21, 2004. He played the whole game, and his team won 1–0 against Hamburger SV. He also played against Schalke 04.
In the 2004–05 season, Rensing played four Bundesliga games and two cup games. In the 2005–06 season, he played six Bundesliga games. He also played his first Champions League game. This was on February 21, 2006, against Milan. The main goalkeeper, Oliver Kahn, was injured.
Something unusual happened on April 15, 2006. Before a game, Rensing took a warm-up shot. It accidentally hit Oliver Kahn in the eye. Kahn couldn't play, so Rensing took his place. Bayern won that game 2–0. In the 2006–07 season, Rensing played one Bundesliga game. He also played two cup games and one Champions League match.
As Oliver Kahn got closer to retiring, Rensing played more often. In Kahn's last season (2007–08), Rensing played 10 Bundesliga games. He also played in cup and UEFA Cup matches. After Kahn retired in 2008, Rensing became Bayern's main goalkeeper.
However, he found it hard to keep his spot. In the 2009–10 season, he had a tough start. Another experienced goalkeeper, Hans-Jörg Butt, took his place. Bayern decided not to offer Rensing a new contract when his old one ended. In November 2010, Rensing tried out for Leicester City but did not sign with them.
Time at 1. FC Köln
On December 21, 2010, Rensing joined 1. FC Köln. He signed a six-month contract. He played 17 league games in the 2010–11 season. His strong performance led to a two-year contract extension.
In the 2011–12 season, he played 32 league games and one cup game. However, Köln was moved down to a lower league in 2012. Because of this, Rensing left the club. He played 49 league games for Köln in total.
Moving to Bayer Leverkusen
Rensing signed with Bayer 04 Leverkusen in August 2012. He was a backup goalkeeper for Bernd Leno. In his only season there, he played two league games and one cup game. He also played one game for their reserve team.
Playing for Fortuna Düsseldorf
On July 1, 2013, Rensing joined Fortuna Düsseldorf. Before his first game, he had an argument during training. This was because another player, Fabian Giefer, was chosen as the main goalkeeper. Because of his reaction, he was told he wouldn't play in league games.
Despite this, he played five games in the 2013–14 season. In the 2014–15 season, he played in 12 of the first 13 games. He also played in a cup game. He finished that season with 24 league matches. Rensing continued to be the main goalkeeper in the 2015–16 season. He played 34 league games and two cup games in the 2016–17 season. He started the 2017–18 season playing the first three league games. He then got an injury.
International Career
Michael Rensing was Germany's main goalkeeper for the Under-19 team. He was part of the German squad for the 2004 UEFA European Under-21 Championship. He later became the first-choice goalkeeper for the Under-21 team. He helped them qualify for the 2006 Euro Under-21 Championship. Michael could have played for either Germany or Serbia.
