Club Career Highlights
Starting Out in Football
Michael Rensing joined the famous Bayern Munich club in 2000. Before that, he played for a team called TuS Lingen. He spent his early years developing his skills in Bayern's youth teams.
He played a few games for Bayern's reserve team in the 2001–02 season. In the 2002–03 season, he played 34 league games for the reserves. This helped him move up and become the backup goalkeeper for the main Bayern Munich team. He was learning from the legendary goalkeeper Oliver Kahn.
Playing for Bayern Munich

Rensing made his first appearance in Germany's top league, the Bundesliga, on February 21, 2004. He played the whole game, and Bayern won 1–0 against Hamburger SV.
Over the next few seasons, Rensing played more and more games. He filled in for Oliver Kahn when he was injured or needed a rest. In 2006, he even played in a Champions League match against AC Milan.
A funny thing happened in 2006 before a game against Arminia Bielefeld. Rensing was warming up and accidentally kicked a ball that hit Oliver Kahn in the eye! Kahn couldn't play, so Rensing stepped in. Bayern ended up winning that game 2–0.
As Kahn got closer to retiring, Rensing played more often. In the 2007–08 season, he played 10 Bundesliga games and several other cup matches. When Kahn retired in 2008, Rensing became Bayern's main goalkeeper.
However, things didn't go as planned in the 2009–10 season. After a tough start, another experienced goalkeeper, Hans-Jörg Butt, took over as the first-choice keeper. Bayern decided not to offer Rensing a new contract when his current one ended.
Moving to 1. FC Köln
In December 2010, Rensing joined 1. FC Köln on a short contract. He played 17 league games in his first half-season there. He played so well that he was even ranked as one of the top goalkeepers in Germany by a sports magazine.
Because of his strong performances, his contract with 1. FC Köln was extended for two more years. He played 32 league games in the 2011–12 season. However, when the club was moved down to a lower league in 2012, Rensing left the team. He played a total of 49 league games for Köln.
Time at Bayer Leverkusen
In August 2012, Rensing signed with Bayer Leverkusen. He was mainly a backup goalkeeper there, playing behind Bernd Leno. He played only two league games and one cup game for the main team during his time there.
Playing for Fortuna Düsseldorf
On July 1, 2013, Rensing joined Fortuna Düsseldorf. At first, he had a disagreement about not being the first-choice goalkeeper and was left out of the team for a while. But he eventually started playing more.
He played 5 games in the 2013–14 season. In the 2014–15 season, he played 24 league matches. Rensing continued to be the main goalkeeper for Fortuna Düsseldorf in the following seasons. He played 34 league games in the 2015–16 and 2016–17 seasons. He started the 2017–18 season as the main keeper but got injured early on.
International Football
Michael Rensing was Germany's top goalkeeper for the Under-19 national team. He was part of the German Under-21 squad for the 2004 UEFA European Under-21 Championship. Even though he didn't play in that tournament, he later became the first-choice goalkeeper for the German Under-21 team. He helped them qualify for the 2006 Euro Under-21 Championship. Because of his family background, he could have chosen to play for either Germany or Serbia.
