Playing Career Highlights
Michael Rummenigge was born in Lippstadt, Germany. He started his football journey at Borussia Lippstadt. At 17, he joined Bayern Munich in 1981. He was already part of the German junior national team.
Time at Bayern Munich
Michael became a professional player for Bayern Munich in 1982. By 1983, he was a regular starter for the team. He played for Bayern Munich until 1988. During this time, his team won the German championship three times. They also won the DFB-Pokal (German Cup) twice, in 1984 and 1986.
Michael also played for the German national team. He represented Germany twice, in 1983 and 1986.
Moving to Borussia Dortmund
In 1988, Michael moved to Borussia Dortmund. At first, some fans were not sure about him. But by the end of his first season, he helped Dortmund win the DFB-Pokal. This was the first major title for Borussia Dortmund since the 1960s. They beat Werder Bremen 4–1 in the final.
In 1991, a new coach, Ottmar Hitzfeld, joined Borussia Dortmund. Michael was chosen to be the team captain. That same year, Borussia Dortmund finished second in the German championship. In 1993, he played in the UEFA Cup final for Borussia Dortmund. They played against Juventus but lost the match. Michael scored Dortmund's only goal in that final.
Playing in Japan
Michael finished his time with Borussia Dortmund in 1993. He had played 309 games in the Bundesliga and scored 80 goals. After that, he moved to Japan. A new professional football league had just started there. He played for Urawa Red Diamonds until 1995. In early 1996, he had to stop playing football because of a serious toe injury.
Life After Football
After his football career, Michael Rummenigge became a trained banker. He now runs a successful sports marketing company in Dortmund. It is called Sports & Business. He also runs football camps for kids called Fußballschule Michael Rummenigge.
He is also a partner in Sportnex GmbH in Munich. Michael also helps with "Germany's best indoor soccer courts" in Münster. He started another business called "Trendsport Rummenigge." This company sells mobile soccer courts and playing fields.
Michael also cares a lot about helping others. He is involved in social projects. In 2007, he passed his exam to become a professional football coach. He earned his UEFA Pro license with excellent results.
Personal Life
Michael Rummenigge is married to Carolin. They have three sons together.
