When he was 18 years old, in 1862, Michael Russell joined the army. He became a private in the 169th New York Volunteer Infantry. He bravely fought in the American Civil War. During his time in the war, he was promoted to the rank of captain.
After the war ended, Michael Russell returned to Troy. He started his own business, working in the grocery trade. For a while, he also worked at the Troy Post Office.
