Michael John Smith (born March 28, 1972) is an American former professional basketball player. He was known by his nickname "The Animal." Michael played in the National Basketball Association (NBA) for seven seasons, from 1994 to 2001.
Michael was a power forward, which is a basketball position usually played by a strong player who scores close to the basket and gets many rebounds. He was 6 feet 8 inches tall. He played college basketball at Providence College. In the 1994 NBA draft, the Sacramento Kings chose him in the second round. During his NBA career, he played for the Kings, the Vancouver Grizzlies, and the Washington Wizards. He scored a total of 2,527 points and grabbed 3,193 rebounds in the NBA. He also played with the Indiana Pacers during their preseason in 2003.

During his time with the Sacramento Kings, on November 10, 1995, Michael was involved in an incident with Indiana Pacers player Dale Davis. Many players from both teams left their benches during this event. Because of this, all players who left the bench were fined $2,500 and suspended for one game. Michael Smith and Dale Davis were each fined $20,000 and suspended for two games.
