Early Life and Education
Michaela Angela Davis was born on March 31, 1964, in Landshut, Germany. She grew up in Washington, D.C.. Her parents are Harold Edward Gregory Davis and Helen Jean Butler. Michaela has two sisters, Debbie and Monica, and a brother named Eddie.
She began her studies at the Duke Ellington School of the Arts in Washington, D.C. There, she was a National Arts Scholar. Later, she attended New York University. She also studied acting at the Stella Adler Acting Conservatory. She learned dance at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater.
Writing and Magazine Work
After finishing her studies, Davis started working at Essence magazine in 1991. Her first job was as an associate fashion editor. One of her early tasks was styling Anita Hill for an important event.
Davis became a key editor at Essence magazine. She worked as the associate fashion and culture editor. She also became the executive fashion and beauty editor. She helped start Vibe magazine as its first fashion director. Later, she was the last editor-in-chief of Honey. This magazine was for young Black women aged 18 to 34.
