Micheal Williams: Basketball Star
Micheal Williams was chosen by the Detroit Pistons in the 1988 NBA draft. He was the 48th player picked overall. In his first year, he played 49 games for the Pistons.
Early Career and NBA Start
During his rookie season, the Pistons won the NBA championship. This was a great start to his career. In 1989, Williams was traded to the Phoenix Suns. He later played for the Charlotte Hornets that same season.
In 1990, the Indiana Pacers acquired him. He played very well during his two years with the Pacers. He averaged 13.2 points and 6.5 assists per game. He also shot 87.5% from the free-throw line.
Setting a Free-Throw Record
Before the 1992–93 season, Williams was traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves. He continued to play strongly for his first two years there. In the 1992–93 season, he was fourth in the league for free-throw accuracy. He made 90.7 percent of his free throws.
Williams broke a record that season. He made his final 84 free throws in a row. This beat the old record of 78 set by Calvin Murphy in 1981. He kept his streak going into the next season (1993–94). He made his first 13 attempts that year.
As of 2022, Micheal Williams still holds the NBA record. He made 97 consecutive free throws during the regular season. This amazing streak happened over 19 games. It lasted from March 24 to November 9, 1993.
Later Career and Retirement
After his strong start with the Timberwolves, Williams faced challenges. He had several injuries in his last four years with the team. Because of these injuries, he played in only 35 games. He even missed the entire 1996–97 season.
In 1999, Minnesota traded him to the Toronto Raptors. By this time, his career was slowing down. He only played two games for the Raptors before he retired that year.
