Michel Dalberto's Life Story
Michel Dalberto was born in Paris, France. His family wasn't involved in music, but he started learning to play the piano when he was very young, at just three and a half years old!
When he was twelve, he met Vlado Perlemuter, who was a student of the famous pianist Alfred Cortot. In 1969, Michel joined Vlado Perlemuter's class at the Paris Conservatoire, which is a very important music school. He studied there for nine years.
Early Success and Awards
Michel Dalberto first became well-known when he won the Clara Haskil Prize in 1975. This was a big achievement! Three years later, he won the First Prize at the Leeds International Piano Competition. Winning these competitions showed everyone how talented he was.
Teaching and Leadership Roles
From 1990 to 2005, Michel Dalberto was an Artistic Adviser for the Les Arcs Academy-Festival in Bourg-Saint-Maurice, France. This means he helped guide the artistic direction of the festival.
He also served as the Chairman of the Jury for the Clara Haskil International Piano Competition from 1991 to 2009. This role meant he led the group of judges who decided who would win the competition. In May 2011, he became a Professor at the Paris Conservatoire, the same school where he studied.
In 1996, the French Government honored Michel Dalberto by giving him the Knight of the Ordre National du Mérite award. This is a special award for people who have done great things for their country.
Michel Dalberto's Music Recordings
Michel Dalberto has recorded many albums of his piano music. His very first recording, which featured two piano sonatas by Schubert, won a special award called the Grand Prize of the Academy Charles Cros.
He has recorded all of Schubert's piano works, which is a huge collection of 14 CDs! He also recorded the Grieg Concerto in A minor and Richard Strauss Burleske in D minor with the London Philharmonia orchestra. He even recorded a "live" performance of the Schumann Concerto with the Wiener Symphoniker orchestra.
Michel Dalberto has also recorded with famous singers like Jessye Norman and Barbara Hendricks. Since 1997, he has recorded for the RCA Red Seal music label. His recordings include Debussy's Preludes and Images, and Mozart's Concerti n°20 and 22. In 2004, he released an album of Liszt's music based on operas by Verdi and Wagner.
