Michel McQueen Martin is a well-known American journalist. She works as a correspondent for National Public Radio (NPR) and WNET. For many years, she has been famous for her radio and TV news reports. She covers important topics happening across the country.

Early Life and Education
Michel Martin grew up in Brooklyn, New York. She went to George Gershwin Junior High there. Later, she attended St. Paul's School in Concord, New Hampshire. She was part of the fifth group of girls to graduate from this school. It used to be only for boys.
In 1980, Martin graduated with honors from Radcliffe College. This college is part of Harvard University. She later continued her studies in 2016. She earned a Master of Arts degree from Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington D.C..
Michel Martin's Journalism Career
Michel Martin started her career in print journalism. She worked for The Washington Post, covering local news. After that, she became a White House correspondent for The Wall Street Journal. This meant she reported on the President and White House events.
Reporting for ABC News
In 1992, Michel Martin joined ABC News. She reported for the show Nightline. She also won an Emmy Award for a report on Day One. An Emmy is a special award for excellence in television.
Hosting Radio and TV Shows
In 2001, Martin hosted a show called Life 360 on PBS. Later, in April 2007, she began hosting Tell Me More for National Public Radio (NPR). This show focused on topics like race, religion, and family. She hosted Tell Me More for seven years.
When NPR decided to cancel Tell Me More in 2014, Martin spoke out. She felt NPR should have supported the show more. She also wondered if NPR was truly committed to serving African-American listeners. Even after the show ended, she stayed with NPR. She and the show's producer worked to include similar topics in other programs.
From 2015 until 2023, Martin hosted Weekend All Things Considered. She also hosted the Consider This Podcast. She has also appeared on Real Time with Bill Maher as a panelist.
Current Roles in News
Since 2018, Michel Martin has been a correspondent for Amanpour & Company on WNET. In March 2023, NPR announced that Martin would join the Morning Edition team. She became one of the main anchors for this popular morning radio show. Her first day on Morning Edition was March 27, 2023.
Personal Life
Michel Martin is married to an attorney named Billy Martin. They have twin children together. She also has two grown daughters from her husband's previous marriage.
Awards and Recognitions
Michel Martin has received many awards for her excellent journalism.
- Candace Award from the National Coalition of 100 Black Women in 1992.
- Emmy Award for her reporting on the international effort to ban landmines.
- Joan Barone Award for her national affairs broadcasting. This award is from the Radio and Television Correspondents' Association.
- Silver Gavel Award in 2002 from the American Bar Association.
- She was nominated for another Emmy with Robert Krulwich. This was for an ABC News program about how children view different races.
- In 2019, she became a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
