Michel McQueen Martin is a well-known American journalist. She works as a reporter for National Public Radio (NPR) and WNET, a public television station. After working for ten years in newspapers, Martin became famous for her radio and TV news reports. She covers important topics happening across the country.

Early Life and Education

Michel Martin grew up in Brooklyn, New York. She went to St. Paul's School in Concord, New Hampshire. She was part of the fifth group of girls to graduate from this school, which used to be only for boys. In 1980, she graduated with honors from Harvard University. Later, in 2016, she earned another degree from Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington D.C..

Her Journalism Career

Starting Out in News

Michel Martin began her career working for newspapers. She reported on local news for The Washington Post. She then became a reporter covering the White House for The Wall Street Journal. In 1992, she joined ABC News.

Working at ABC News and PBS

At ABC, Martin reported for the show Nightline. She won an Emmy Award for a report she did for the show Day One. In 2001, she hosted a show called Life 360 for PBS.

Her Time at NPR

In April 2007, Michel Martin started hosting Tell Me More for National Public Radio (NPR). She hosted this show for seven years. It focused on important topics like race, religion, and spirituality. When NPR decided to cancel Tell Me More in 2014, Martin spoke out. She felt NPR should have supported the show more. She also wondered if NPR was truly committed to serving African-American listeners and other people of color.

Even after the show ended, Martin and its producer, Carline Watson, stayed with NPR. They worked to include more stories about race, identity, faith, gender, and family in other NPR programs. From 2015 to 2023, Martin hosted Weekend All Things Considered. She also hosted the Consider This Podcast. She has also appeared on the TV show Real Time with Bill Maher.

Recent Roles

In 2010, Martin and MSNBC anchor David Shuster filmed a test episode for a new news show for CNN. Since 2018, Martin has been a reporter for WNET's Amanpour & Company. In March 2023, NPR announced that Michel Martin would join the Morning Edition team. She started her new role as an anchor for Morning Edition on March 27.

Personal Life

Michel Martin is married to an attorney named Billy Martin. They have twin children together. She also has two grown stepdaughters from her husband's previous marriage.

Awards and Honors

Michel Martin has received many awards for her excellent journalism:

  • Emmy Award for her reporting on the international effort to ban landmines.
