Michel de Beaupuy: A French Hero

Early Life and Military Start

Michel Beaupuy was born in 1755 into a noble family in a region of France called Périgord. When he was just 16 years old, he decided to join the King's army as a regular soldier.

Two years later, he was promoted to second lieutenant. This was a good start for a young man from a noble background who wanted to serve his country.

Becoming a Republican Soldier

In 1792, France was going through big changes. Michel Beaupuy was leading a group of volunteer soldiers from Dordogne. He was very good at his job and was noticed by his commanders.

Because of his skills, he was made a brigade General in 1793. This meant he was in charge of a large group of soldiers.

Fighting in the French Revolution

General Beaupuy took part in the siege of Mainz, a big battle where soldiers tried to take control of a city. After that, he was sent to a region called Vendée to fight in another part of the war.

He won an important victory at the Battle of La Tremblaye. He was also wounded twice during these battles, showing how bravely he fought.

Fighting in Germany

In 1794, General Beaupuy was moved to the Army of the Rhine. This army was fighting in Germany. He continued to show great courage and skill in battles there.

He was known for leading the rear guard, which is the group of soldiers that protects the main army from behind during a retreat. This was a very dangerous job.

His Final Battle

While protecting his army during a retreat through the Black Forest, General Beaupuy was tragically killed. He was hit by a cannonball during the Battle of Emmendingen in a place called Val d'Enfer.

Honors and Legacy

Monument in Volgelsheim

A monument was started in Volgelsheim in 1801 to honor Michel Beaupuy. It took many years to finish. In the 1850s, it was still not complete and was covered in plants.

Later, a Colonel named Ferru helped restore and finish the monument in 1861. Soldiers and towns helped pay for it. The monument was destroyed in 1940 but was rebuilt and opened again in 1979.

Name on the Arc de Triomphe

Michel Beaupuy's name is one of the many brave soldiers carved on the famous Arc de Triomphe in Paris. This is a huge arch that honors French military victories and leaders.

His name is also carved at Versailles, another important historical place in France. These honors show how important he was to French history.
