Michelangelo Anselmi (born around 1492, died around 1554) was an Italian artist. He was a painter during the Renaissance and Mannerism art periods. He mostly worked in a city called Parma.
About Michelangelo Anselmi
Michelangelo Anselmi was likely born in Tuscany, perhaps in Lucca. His family, the Anselmi di Cardano, came from Parma. Around the year 1500, he moved to Siena. We know he was a painter there by 1511. He learned his skills from famous artists like Il Sodoma and Domenico Beccafumi.
Around 1515, Anselmi moved to Parma. There, he painted many large wall paintings called frescoes. He decorated parts of the San Giovanni Evangelista church. He also painted a large artwork for the main church, the Duomo.
Around 1530, he created a painting called Madonna with Saint Sebastian and Saint Roch. You can see this painting today in the National Gallery at Parma. He also painted A Baptism of Christ for the Church of San Prospero in Reggio Emilia.
Anselmi worked with another artist, Rondani. Together, they painted a series of frescoes about the Life of the Virgin. These were for the Oratorio della Concezione in Parma. Anselmi also painted Holy Family with Saint Barbara around 1540. This painting is also in the National Gallery of Parma.
In 1541, he decorated the apse (the rounded end) of the Steccata church in Parma. He followed a design by Giulio Romano. Anselmi also started a painting called Adoration of the Magi. After he died, another artist named Bernardino Gatti finished it.
