Michele Mazzarino's Early Life
Michele Mazzarino was born in Pescina, Italy. At that time, Pescina was part of the Kingdom of Naples. He grew up in Rome. His birth name was Alessandro.
His father was Pietro Mazzarini, and his mother was Ortensia Buffalini. Ortensia came from a noble family in Città di Castello. Michele was one of six children. His older brother, Giulio Mazzarino, became a very powerful Cardinal. Giulio was also the chief minister for King Louis XIV of France.
When Michele was fifteen, in 1620, he joined the Dominican Order. This is a religious group within the Catholic Church. He joined at a convent in Santa Maria sopra Minerva in Rome. He changed his name to Michele to honor his great-uncle, Cardinal Michele Bonelli. In 1624, he continued his studies in Viterbo and Bologna. There, he studied theology, which is the study of religious faith.
Becoming a Church Leader
Michele Mazzarino became a priest in 1628. After this, he taught theology at a college in Rome. This college later became the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas.
In 1635, Mazzarino became a leader for the Dominican Order in Apulia. Two years later, in 1637, the head of the Dominican Order appointed him as a special helper in Rome. In April 1638, he was chosen as the main leader for the region of Rome.
In 1642, Pope Urban VIII appointed Mazzarino to an important role. He became the Master of the Sacred Palace. This job involved advising the Pope on religious matters. In 1645, his brother, Cardinal Mazarin, suggested him for another important position. He was made the Archbishop of Aix-en-Provence by Pope Innocent X.
In October 1647, he was made a Cardinal. This is a very high rank in the Catholic Church. In December of that year, he was named the Cardinal-Priest of Santa Cecilia in Trastevere. In January 1648, he was appointed to be the Viceroy of Catalonia. This meant he would govern Catalonia for the king. He traveled to Barcelona for this role. However, he became ill and had to leave without officially starting the job. He went back to Rome to serve as France's ambassador to the Holy See. Sadly, he passed away the next month, on August 31, 1648.
His Impact and Legacy
