Becoming a Mathematician

Michelle Ann Manes went to the University of California, Berkeley and finished in 1991. She then earned a master's degree in deaf education from Boston University in 1993. She focused on teaching math.

For ten years, from 1993 to 2003, she taught math in Boston. Then, she went back to school. She earned another master's degree in math in 2004. In 2007, she got her Ph.D. from Brown University. Her special project was about how numbers and patterns move and change. Her professor, Joseph H. Silverman, helped her a lot.

After a short time at the University of Southern California, she joined the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa in 2008. In 2022, she also became a leader at the American Institute of Mathematics.

Helping Math Teachers

Michelle Manes loves helping others learn math. In 2010, she helped start the Math Teachers’ Circle of Hawai‘i (MaTCH). This group helps math teachers learn new ways to teach and get better at their jobs.

She was also one of the main editors for a math publication called La Mathematica.

Awards and Honors

Michelle Manes has won several important awards for her work.

In 2015, she won the Golden Section Award from the Mathematical Association of America. This award is for excellent college or university teaching of mathematics. In 2017, she won the Regents’ Medal for Excellence in Teaching from the University of Hawaii.

Also in 2017, the Association for Women in Mathematics gave her their Service Award. This was for her work in helping women in math. She was named an AWM Fellow in 2020. This honor recognized her efforts to support research careers for women in mathematics. She helped create networks for women in many areas of math.

In 2024, she was chosen as a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society. This is a very high honor in the math world.
