What Do They Look Like?
The black-tailed marmoset has dark brown fur. Its front parts are a bit lighter. As its name suggests, it has a black tail. A cool feature is a bright white or yellow-white stripe. This stripe goes down its thigh. Its ears are bare and flesh-colored. They stick out from its fur. These marmosets are about 18 to 28 centimeters (7 to 11 inches) long. They weigh between 300 and 400 grams (about 0.6 to 0.9 pounds).
Where Do They Live and How Do They Behave?
Black-tailed marmosets are active during the day. This means they are diurnal. They spend most of their time in trees. They use their strong claws to climb. They used to live only in rainforests. But now they also live in plantations. This has helped them spread their homes. At night, they sleep in tree hollows. They also hide in thick plants.
These monkeys live in small family groups. They mark their home area with special scents. If other animals try to enter their space, they will shout. They also make angry faces. These include lowering their eyebrows and guarding their lips.
What Do Black-tailed Marmosets Eat?
The main food for black-tailed marmosets is tree sap. They get this by chewing holes in tree bark. They also eat other things. These include bird eggs, fruits, insects, and small animals.
Family Life and Raising Young
A female marmoset is pregnant for about 145 days. After this, she usually gives birth to two babies. Sometimes, but rarely, she might have three. Like many other marmosets, the father helps raise the babies. Other members of the group also help. The young marmosets drink milk for about six months. They become fully grown when they are about two years old.
