Micranthes californica, also known as the California saxifrage, is a type of flowering plant. It's sometimes called Saxifraga californica.
This plant grows naturally in many parts of California, especially in the western and northern areas, away from the desert regions. You can also find it in nearby southern Oregon and northern Baja California. It prefers moist places, from coastal areas to high up in the mountains.
What is California Saxifrage?
The California saxifrage is a perennial plant, which means it lives for more than two years. It grows as a small herb.
Leaves and Stems
At the base of the plant, it forms a cluster of leaves called a rosette. These leaves are gray-green, thick, and oval-shaped, with small teeth along their edges. They can grow up to 10 centimeters (about 4 inches) long.
Flowers and How They Grow
The plant sends up a tall stem, called a flower stalk, which can reach up to 35 centimeters (about 14 inches) high. This stalk holds clusters of small flowers. Sometimes, all the flowers grow on just one side of the stalk.
Each flower has five green or reddish sepals, which are like small leaves that protect the bud. Inside, there are five tiny white petals. In the very center of the flower, you'll find ten stamens, which are the parts that produce pollen.
