The Microhyla fissipes, also known as the ornate chorus frog, is a small frog. It lives in parts of East Asia and Southeast Asia. You can find it in southern and central China, Taiwan, and even down to the Malay Peninsula. This frog was once thought to be the same as another species, Microhyla ornata, which lives in South Asia. Because of this, names like 'ornate narrow-mouthed frog' or 'ornamented pygmy frog' might refer to either species.
Meet the Ornate Chorus Frog
Like many frogs in its family, the Microhyla fissipes is quite small. Male frogs usually grow to be about 22 to 27 millimeters long. That's less than an inch! Female frogs are a little bigger, reaching about 25 to 28 millimeters. Even their tadpoles are tiny, measuring around 22 millimeters in total length.
Where Does It Live and What Does It Do?
The ornate chorus frog is a very common frog and can be found in many places. It lives in different kinds of habitats. These include forests with low bushes, grasslands, and even farms. You can also find them in areas where animals graze and in cities.
These frogs like to burrow a bit, so they are often found hidden in the leaves on the forest floor. They are mostly active at night. However, during the rainy season, you might see them moving around during the day too.
They lay their eggs and breed in puddles and other calm water bodies. These frogs are quite good at living in places changed by humans. They can even be found on farms that are not used too much. In Peninsular Malaysia, they live in higher hills and mountain forests. There, you might spot them on low plants or near wet, muddy areas.
