Exploring the River's Flow
The Middle Branch Oswegatchie River has different sections. Most of it is shallow and moves quickly. However, there are a few spots where the water slows down. These calmer areas are great for activities like canoeing.
Calm Spots for Canoeing
Two main calm sections are popular with canoeists.
- Alder Bed Flow: This is one of the peaceful areas where the water is still.
- Moynehan Flow: This section is also very calm. It starts where a smaller stream, the Lower South Pond Outlet, flows into the river.
Kayaking Adventures
Sometimes, when there has been a lot of rain, the water levels in the river rise. When this happens, experienced kayakers might try paddling here. They usually start from Bear Pond Road, which is a few miles upstream from Alder Bed Flow. They then paddle downstream to another road near Mullins Flow. Because these roads are only open during certain seasons and the area is far from towns, this part of the river is not used very often.
What Fish Live Here?
The Middle Branch Oswegatchie River is home to several types of fish.
- Brook Trout: These are the main sport-fish found along the entire river. Many people enjoy fishing for them.
- Chubs: These are smaller fish that also live in the river.
- Bullheads: These are another type of fish you might find in these waters.
