About the River's Flow
The West Branch Oswegatchie River generally moves more slowly than the Middle Branch, which eventually flows into it. Even though it's often calm, the river has several still, wide areas. These include places like Long Pond, Round Pond, Rock Pond, Mud Pond, and Long Level.
Rapids and Waterfalls
While parts of the river are calm, these peaceful sections are often separated by challenging rapids and waterfalls. Rapids are areas where the water flows very fast over rocks, making it difficult to travel through. Waterfalls are places where the river water drops down from a height, creating a beautiful but impassable barrier.
River Branches and Tributaries
A tributary is a smaller stream or river that flows into a larger river. The West Branch Oswegatchie River has many tributaries that add water to it along its path. These smaller waterways contribute to the overall flow and health of the river system.
