A Look Back at Middlebush History

Village of Middlebush

The story of Middlebush Village began a long time ago. In 1701, a group of eight people bought a huge piece of land. It was about 10,000 acres, which is like 7,500 football fields! This land is now part of Franklin Township.

They split this large area into smaller plots. One of the lines they drew became a road called the Middle Line. Today, we know it as South Middlebush Road. Another important road in the area is Amwell Road. This road used to connect New Brunswick to Millstone. Millstone was the main town for Somerset County back then.

By 1704, two brothers, John and Peter Wyckoff, moved to the Middlebush area. Their father, Cornelius Wyckoff, was one of the original land buyers.

Important Buildings and Sites

The Middlebush Village Historic District has several special places. These buildings and sites tell us about the past.

Middlebush Reformed Church

The Middlebush Reformed Church is a beautiful church located where South Middlebush Road and Amwell Road meet. The church you see today was built in 1919. It replaced an older church from 1834. This building mixes two styles: Gothic Revival and Craftsman.

Voorhees House

The Voorhees House is at 1719 Amwell Road. It was built in 1793 by P. Metz. This house has a Georgian style. It's the oldest building in the whole district! In 1834, people met here to start the Middlebush Reformed Church. Next to the house, there's also a large, red Dutch barn from the 1800s.

Middlebush School

The Middlebush School is located at 1755 Amwell Road. It was built in 1926 as an elementary school for young students. Today, this building is used by the Franklin Township Board of Education.
