Middlefork is a small, unincorporated community located in Warren Township, Clinton County, Indiana. It gets its name from the Middle Fork of Wildcat Creek, a stream that flows along the northern edge of the community.

Exploring Middlefork's Past

Middlefork was established along the Michigan Road, which was a very important road in early Indiana. Even though it was on a major road, Middlefork never got a railroad line. Because of this, it stayed a small community, serving as a local center for people living nearby.

Early Businesses and Leaders

The very first store in Middlefork was run by William Sims. Later, John Evans took over the store. The community's first postmaster, who was in charge of the mail, was John Purdum.

Community Groups and Organizations

Many different groups and clubs, called lodges or fraternal organizations, were active in Middlefork. These included the Masons, the Red Men, and the Odd Fellows. There was also the GAR, which was a group for Civil War veterans.

Another important group was the Independent Order of Good Templars. This organization worked to promote a lifestyle without alcohol. They were very successful in Middlefork. They managed to stop the sale of alcoholic drinks in the village, and after their efforts, no more such sales happened there.

Middlefork Post Office History

A post office was first opened in Middlefork in 1836. In its early years, the name was sometimes spelled as "Middle Fork." The post office served the community for many years until it finally closed down in 1907.
