History of Middletown
Middletown was officially started as a city in 1797. It was built on land that used to belong to Jacob Meyers and Culberth Harrison. People believe it was named "Middletown" because it was in the middle of two older cities: Louisville (founded in 1778) and Shelbyville (founded in 1792).
Over time, the city's boundaries grew. However, after 1919, the city stopped holding elections and collecting taxes. Because of this, a judge officially ended Middletown's city status in 1960.
But Middletown became a city again in 1976. It started as a "sixth-class city" with a simple government. In 1982, its status was upgraded to a "fourth-class city." This meant it had more responsibilities and services.
