Miguel Colmeiro y Penido (born October 22, 1816, died June 21, 1901) was a famous Spanish botanist. A botanist is a scientist who studies plants. He was also a member of the Spanish Royal Academy of Sciences. This is a very important group for scientists in Spain.
About Miguel Colmeiro
Miguel Colmeiro was born in Santiago de Compostela, Spain, on October 22, 1816. He studied a lot and became a very important person in science.
He worked at the Complutense University of Madrid. There, he was the head of the Faculty of Sciences. He later became the Dean, which is a high-ranking leader at a university.
Miguel Colmeiro also directed the Real Jardín Botánico de Madrid, which is a famous botanical garden. He taught about plants, including how to describe them (Phytography) and where they grow around the world (Botanical Geography).
He was a member of two important Spanish academies: the Spanish Royal Academy of Sciences and the Royal National Academy of Medicine. He also helped start the Royal Spanish Society of Natural History.
Colmeiro wrote many important books and papers about plants. He was given a special award called the Knight Grand Cross of the Civil Order of María Victoria. He passed away in Madrid on June 21, 1901.
