Miguel Sebastián Gascón was born in Madrid, Spain, on May 13, 1957. He is a Spanish politician and an economist. An economist studies how money, goods, and services are made and used. Miguel Sebastián was an important part of the Spanish government, serving as the Minister of Industry, Trade and Tourism from 2008 to 2011.

Before becoming a minister, Miguel Sebastián worked as a professor at the Complutense University of Madrid. He also served as a personal economic adviser to Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero starting in 2004.

Political Career

In 2006, Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero chose Miguel Sebastián to be the socialist candidate for the Madrid Mayoral elections in 2007. However, he did not win the election. The former Mayor of Madrid, Alberto Ruiz-Gallardón from the People's Party (PP), won instead.

Minister of Industry

From 2008 to 2011, Miguel Sebastián was the Minister of Industry, Trade and Tourism. This role meant he was in charge of helping Spanish businesses grow, encouraging trade with other countries, and supporting tourism.

Promoting Electric Vehicles

In 2008, while he was Minister of Industry, Miguel Sebastián announced an exciting plan. The Spanish government wanted to help put 1 million electric cars on the road by 2014. This plan was part of a bigger effort to save energy and use it more wisely. He believed that electric vehicles were the future and would lead to a new industrial revolution.

Other Activities

After his time as a minister, Miguel Sebastián continued to be involved in important organizations. Since 2019, he has been an independent member of the Board of Directors for Indra Sistemas. This is a large Spanish company that works in technology and consulting.
