Mikael began his professional career in 2015. He played in his first big Masters 1000 tournament at the 2017 Miami Open. He won his first match at this level in the 2018 tournament.

Reaching New Heights: 2019–2021

Mikael played in his first major tournament, the 2019 French Open, after winning qualifying matches. He won his first match at a major event there. He finished 2019 ranked No. 74 in the world.

He made his debut at the 2020 Australian Open and won his first match. His ranking then reached a new high of No. 67 in March 2020.

At the 2021 Australian Open, Mikael reached the third round of a major tournament for the first time. He beat Hubert Hurkacz and Carlos Alcaraz before losing to Stefanos Tsitsipas. He also reached the third round at a Masters 1000 event for the first time at the 2021 Miami Open.

At the 2021 French Open, Mikael had a big win against Gaël Monfils, who was ranked much higher. He reached the third round of this major tournament too.

He finished 2021 ranked No. 93.

Continuing Progress: 2022

Mikael played in the 2022 Australian Open but lost in the first round. In February, he reached the semi-finals at the 2022 Open Sud de France. He beat three French players, including Gaël Monfils again.

Mikael started 2023 by reaching the quarter-finals at the Adelaide International 2. He then reached the final of the BW Open tournament. These results helped him reach the top 60 in the world rankings.

He played for Sweden in the Davis Cup and won both his matches. Sweden won the tie and moved on to the Davis Cup Finals. He reached a new career high ranking of world No. 51 in April 2023, and then entered the top 50 a week later.

At the 2023 Wimbledon Championships, Mikael reached the third round for the first time. He had a big win against Taylor Fritz, who was ranked No. 9 in the world.

In July 2023, Mikael was suspended from playing tennis for 18 months. This was because he missed three out-of-competition drug tests within a year. He said he was innocent and appealed the decision, but the suspension was upheld.
