Mikael Ymer is a professional tennis player from Sweden. He was born on September 9, 1998. He became a professional player in 2015. Mikael reached his highest singles ranking of 50th in the world in April 2023. For doubles, his highest ranking was 187th in October 2017.

Early Life

Mikael Ymer was born in Skara, Sweden. His parents moved to Sweden from Ethiopia. He has two brothers who also play tennis. His older brother is Elias Ymer, and his younger brother, Rafael, plays in junior tournaments.

Junior Career

Mikael played in his first big junior final at the 2015 Wimbledon Championships. He played in the boys' singles event but lost to American player Reilly Opelka.

In 2015, Mikael won his second European Championships title for players under 18. He won the final match against Bernabé Zapata Miralles.

Professional Career

Starting Out: 2016–2018

Mikael first played in a major ATP tournament called a Masters 1000 event in 2017. This was at the 2017 Miami Open. He got to play because he received a special invitation, called a wildcard. He won his first match at this level in the 2018 tournament.

Big Steps: 2019–2021

Mikael played in his first main draw of a Grand Slam tournament at the 2019 French Open. He had to win qualifying matches to get in. He won his first Grand Slam match there against Blaž Rola.

By the end of 2019, he was ranked 74th in the world for singles.

He played in the 2020 Australian Open for the first time. He won his first-round match against Yasutaka Uchiyama. In March 2020, he reached a new high ranking of 67th.

Mikael reached the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time at the 2021 Australian Open. He beat Hubert Hurkacz and Carlos Alcaraz before losing to Stefanos Tsitsipas. At the 2021 Miami Open, he also reached the third round of a Masters 1000 event for the first time.

At the 2021 French Open, Mikael achieved his biggest win. He defeated Gaël Monfils, who was ranked 15th in the world. This win helped him reach the third round of a Grand Slam again. He then lost to Jannik Sinner.

In August 2021, Mikael played at the 2021 Winston-Salem Open. He had a great tournament, beating several strong players. He reached his first ATP semi-final and then his first ATP final. He reached the second round at 2022 Wimbledon Championships.

At the 2022 Citi Open, Mikael defeated Andy Murray and Aslan Karatsev. He then beat Emil Ruusuvuori to reach the quarterfinals of an ATP 500 tournament. He continued his good run by defeating Sebastian Korda to reach his first ATP 500 semi-final. This helped his ranking move up to 77th in the world.

He reached the semi-finals at the 2022 Firenze Open as a qualifier. He beat Aslan Karatsev and Roberto Carballés Baena. This moved his ranking back into the top 80. At his home tournament, the Stockholm Open, he reached the quarterfinals.

He also qualified for the main draw of the 2022 Rolex Paris Masters. He won his first match but then lost a very close match to Félix Auger-Aliassime.

Reaching Top 50 and Challenges: 2023

Mikael started 2023 in Adelaide. He reached the quarterfinals at the second tournament there. He lost in the first round of the Australian Open.

He reached the final of the BW Open in January 2023. This helped him enter the top 60 in the rankings. He played for Sweden in the Davis Cup and won both his matches.
