The 2023 Wimbledon Championships was a huge Grand Slam tennis tournament. It happened at the famous All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in Wimbledon, London, United Kingdom. This event is one of the four biggest tennis tournaments in the world.

About the Tournament

The matches were played on special grass courts. The main games took place at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club. This was from July 3 to July 16, 2023. Before that, qualifying matches were held from June 26 to June 29, 2023. These happened at the Bank of England Sports Ground in Roehampton.

The 2023 Championships was the 136th time this tournament was held. It was also the 55th time since tennis became "Open" to all players. This event was the third Grand Slam tournament of the year. The International Tennis Federation (ITF) organized it. It was part of the professional tennis tours for men (ATP) and women (WTA). There were also competitions for junior players and wheelchair tennis players.

What Kinds of Games Were Played?

The tournament had many different types of games:

  • Men's singles and doubles
  • Women's singles and doubles
  • Mixed doubles (a man and a woman on each team)
  • Boys' (under 18) singles and doubles
  • Girls' (under 18) singles and doubles
  • Boys' and girls' (under 14) singles
  • Wheelchair tennis for men and women (singles and doubles)

For the first time, the men's doubles matches were shorter. They changed from best of five sets to best of three sets. This made the games quicker.

Middle Sunday Tradition

This was the second year that matches were played on the first Sunday of the tournament. This day is called "Middle Sunday." Before 2022, Wimbledon almost always had no games on Middle Sunday. This tradition was only broken a few times if rain caused big delays.

Special Moments

During the tournament, a special event honored Roger Federer. He is a famous Swiss tennis player. It was 20 years since he first won Wimbledon in 2003.
