Hsieh Su-wei (Chinese: 謝淑薇; pinyin: Xiè Shúwéi; born on January 4, 1986) is a professional tennis player from Taiwan. She is known for her amazing skills in doubles matches. She even became the world No. 1 in doubles!

Hsieh has won nine Grand Slam titles, which are some of the biggest tournaments in tennis. Many people think she is one of the best doubles players ever. She also reached No. 23 in singles, making her the highest-ranked Taiwanese player in both singles and doubles history.

She is famous for her unique playing style. She hits the ball with two hands on both sides. Her shots are often flat and fast, but she also uses clever tricks and aggressive volleys. Her unusual way of playing has earned her the nickname "The Wizard."

Hsieh reached her highest singles ranking of No. 23 in February 2013. In doubles, she became No. 1 in May 2014. She held the top doubles spot for 59 weeks! This is the longest time for any tennis player from East Asia.

She has won three singles titles and 35 doubles titles on the WTA Tour. She also won many titles on the ITF Circuit. Hsieh has earned seven medals at the Asian Games, including two gold medals. She has won more than $12 million in prize money!

Hsieh retired from singles matches in 2024. Commentators said she was "a killer on the court" who could make shots that seemed impossible. She is also respected by other players and is a charming person on the tour.

About Hsieh Su-wei

Hsieh was born in Hsinchu and grew up in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. Her parents are Hsieh Tze-lung and Ho Fom-ju. She started playing tennis when she was five years old. Her younger sister, Hsieh Shu-ying, and brother, Hsieh Cheng-peng, are also professional tennis players. Hsieh's tennis heroes are Steffi Graf and Andre Agassi.

Hsieh's Unique Playing Style

Hsieh has a very unusual way of playing tennis. She once joked that she had "no plan" for a match and just tried to play in her "Su-wei style." Even though she is not very tall or big, she hits powerful shots with both hands.

She uses many different types of shots, like sliced backhands, drop shots, and lobs. She is known for her amazing control and smart way of building up points. Because of her clever and complete game, people call her "The Wizard."

Many top players have praised her style. Maria Sharapova once said that Hsieh "used to be a nightmare" for her in junior matches. Sharapova noted that Hsieh's game involves many dropshots and slices to make opponents "crazy."

Hsieh's Tennis Journey

Starting Her Career

Hsieh started playing professionally in 2001 when she was 15. She had an amazing year, winning five events on the ITF Circuit and reaching semifinals and quarterfinals in her first WTA Tour events. She won 37 matches in a row!

In 2004, she reached her first WTA doubles final at the Korea Open. She made her first Grand Slam main-draw appearance in singles at the US Open in 2005. By the end of 2005, she had won many singles and doubles titles on the ITF Circuit.

First Big Doubles Wins

In 2006, Hsieh played in the main draws of the French Open and Wimbledon for the first time. In 2007, she made a big step forward in doubles. She and her partner, Chuang Chia-jung, won the China Open and the Korea Open. These were her first WTA titles.

Breaking Through in Singles

Hsieh had a great start to 2008 at the Australian Open. She became the first Taiwanese player to reach the fourth round of a major tournament. She then finished the year strong by winning doubles titles in Bali and Korea. She ended 2008 ranked in the top 100 for singles for the first time.

Top 10 in Doubles

In 2009, Hsieh started the year by winning a doubles title in Sydney with her partner, Peng Shuai. They then won the Italian Open, which was her biggest doubles title yet. They also reached the semifinals of the French Open. By the end of 2009, Hsieh was in the top 10 of the doubles rankings.

Winning Grand Slams and Reaching World No. 1

Hsieh's career really took off in 2012. She won her first WTA singles title at the Malaysian Open. She also reached the third round of Wimbledon, her best Grand Slam singles result in years. Later that year, she won two more singles titles, reaching the top 25 in singles for the first time.

In 2013, Hsieh and Peng Shuai won their first Grand Slam title together at Wimbledon. This was a huge moment, as Hsieh became the first Taiwanese tennis player to win a Grand Slam. They also won the WTA Tour Championships at the end of the year, becoming the first Asian players to win this event.

In 2014, Hsieh reached the world No. 1 ranking in doubles with Peng. They then won the French Open, their second Grand Slam title together.

More Grand Slam Success

After some quieter years, Hsieh started winning big again. In 2018, she had a great run in singles at the Australian Open, reaching the fourth round. She also upset world No. 1 Simona Halep at Wimbledon, showing her amazing skill. She won her third singles title in Japan that year.

In 2019, Hsieh and her new partner, Barbora Strýcová, won the Wimbledon doubles title without losing a single set. This was Hsieh's third Grand Slam doubles title. She also had impressive singles wins, beating world No. 1 Naomi Osaka at the Miami Open.

In 2020, Hsieh returned to the No. 1 doubles ranking with Strýcová. This was a remarkable achievement, as it had been over five years since she last held that spot.

In 2021, Hsieh reached her first Grand Slam singles quarterfinal at the Australian Open. At 35, she was the oldest player to reach a major quarterfinal for the first time. She also won her third Wimbledon doubles title with Elise Mertens.

Recent Achievements

After taking a break due to injury, Hsieh returned to the tour in 2023. She quickly found her winning form again. She and Wang Xinyu won the French Open doubles title. Soon after, she won her fourth Wimbledon doubles title with Barbora Strýcová.

In 2024, Hsieh announced that the Australian Open would be her last Grand Slam in singles. She ended her singles career there. However, she had an incredible tournament in doubles! She won her first mixed doubles Grand Slam title with Jan Zieliński at the Australian Open. She also won the women's doubles title with Elise Mertens, making it her eighth major title. She continued her success by winning another mixed doubles title at Wimbledon with Zieliński.
