Mike Gibson (born May 27, 1940 – died September 23, 2015) was a famous Australian journalist and TV presenter. People often called him "Gibbo." He was well-known for talking about sports on TV and radio, and for writing columns in newspapers.
A Star in Sports Media
Mike Gibson started his career writing for newspapers. He covered exciting topics like greyhound racing and rugby league. Soon, his talent took him to radio. In the 1970s, he joined the breakfast show on 2SM radio. Later, in 1979, he moved to 2GB.
His Famous TV Shows
Gibson became a familiar face on television. In 1981, he began hosting Wide World of Sports. This show was a big hit with sports fans. He worked alongside famous Australian cricket captain Ian Chappell. Mike also wrote a regular column for The Australian Women's Weekly.
From 1988, he co-hosted Good Morning Australia for several years. He worked with Kerri-Anne Kennerley on this popular morning show.
One of his most famous roles was hosting The Back Page. He hosted this show on Fox Sports for 16 years. His friend, comedian Billy Birmingham, often joined him. Billy even did funny impressions of Gibson on the show!
Awards and Retirement
Mike Gibson's long and successful career was recognized in 2007. He received the Australian Sports Commission Media Awards Lifetime Achievement Award. This award celebrated his amazing contributions to sports media. After many years entertaining Australians, Gibson retired in 2013.
Family Life
Mike Gibson was a father to five children. One of his children, Courtney Gibson, also worked in television. Mike passed away on September 23, 2015, on the Central Coast of New South Wales.
