When GMA Started
The first episode of Good Morning Australia aired on February 23, 1981. It was on Network Ten from 7:00 AM to 9:00 AM.
Original Hosts
The first hosts of GMA were Gordon Elliott and Sue Kellaway. They helped start the show. Di Morrissey was also part of the team. She was a "roving reporter," which means she traveled around to report on different things.
Changes in Hosts
- Sue Kellaway left the show soon after it began.
- Kerri-Anne Kennerley took her place. She was a host until the end of 1991.
- After Kerri-Anne, Sandra Sully became a host. Joy Smithers also hosted for a time.
- The male host position also changed over the years. Some of the hosts included Tim Webster, Mike Gibson, Terry Willesee, Mike Hammond, and Ron Wilson.
GMA's Competition
Good Morning Australia had a rival TV show. This was the Today show on the Nine Network. Today started in 1982. Interestingly, Sue Kellaway, who was an early host of GMA, later joined the Today show. GMA usually came in second place in the TV ratings. This means Today often had more viewers.
The End of GMA
In 1992, Good Morning Australia changed its time slot. It moved to 6:30 AM to 8:30 AM. This change happened when a new show called The Morning Show started. That show was hosted by Bert Newton.
At the end of 1992, the original Good Morning Australia was cancelled. However, the name Good Morning Australia lived on! Bert Newton's morning show took over the name. It became Good Morning Australia with Bert Newton. That show ran until 2005.
New Breakfast Shows
Since the original Good Morning Australia ended, many new breakfast TV shows have started. These include popular programs like Sunrise and ABC News Breakfast. There are also weekend versions like Weekend Today, Weekend Sunrise, and Weekend Breakfast.
