History
News Breakfast first started on 3 November 2008. Back then, it was called ABC News Breakfast and was shown on a channel called ABC2 (which is now ABC TV Plus). The first hosts were Virginia Trioli, Barrie Cassidy, and Joe O'Brien. They also had Paul Kennedy for sports and Vanessa O'Hanlon for weather.
Over time, some hosts changed. In 2009, Joe O'Brien became a full-time host. Then, in 2010, Michael Rowland took over from Joe O'Brien. Joe moved to Sydney to host another news show.
In May 2011, the program moved to the main ABC TV channel. This meant that children's shows moved to ABC2 and ABC3 (now ABC Me).
In November 2011, the show expanded! A new weekend version called Weekend Breakfast was announced. It would be hosted by Andrew Geoghegan and Miriam Corowa.
In January 2014, ABC News Breakfast got a big new look. They launched a larger, improved set with three different areas for presenters. This new set included a news desk, a big screen for news, and a comfy seating area.
In April 2017, the show changed its name to simply News Breakfast. This happened when the whole ABC News brand was updated.
In May 2019, Virginia Trioli announced she would leave News Breakfast. She moved to host a morning radio show on ABC Radio Melbourne. In June 2019, Lisa Millar was chosen to take Virginia's place as co-host. She started on 19 August.
What the Show Covers
News Breakfast brings you the latest news from Australia and around the world. It also includes discussions, financial updates, sports news, and weather forecasts. The show uses information from ABC news teams and radio programs everywhere.
The program is shown live on ABC in New South Wales, the Australian Capital Territory, Victoria, and Tasmania all year. In some other states like South Australia and the Northern Territory, it's shown a little later because of time differences. During summer, when some states have daylight saving time, the show's broadcast times adjust even more for different parts of Australia. However, the ABC News channel always shows the program live across Australia starting at 6:00 am.
Weekend Breakfast
Weekend Breakfast is a special version of the show for Saturdays and Sundays. It features live breaking news, discussions, interviews with important people, and weekend sports and weather. It's hosted by Johanna Nicholson and Fauziah Ibrahim. This show started on 4 February 2012. It airs from 7:00 am to 11:00 am on weekend mornings on the ABC News channel. On Sunday mornings, you can also watch it on ABC TV from 7:00 am to 9:00 am.
The Breakfast Couch
The Breakfast Couch is a shorter show that highlights the best arts and entertainment chats from the past week on News Breakfast. It's a great way to catch up on fun interviews you might have missed. This show began on 12 August 2017.
